Serbian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic stated that it is estimated that the public sector employs half a million people and nearly 40,000 people work in administrative departments, not counting the 25,000 local self-government employees.
In an interview with the Novi Sad newspaper Dnevnik, Ljajic said that there is a surplus of employees in public administration but the quality of work is not up to standard and that for economic reasons, but also in order to increase efficiency, the number of employees must be reduced.
Rationalisation in the public administration cannot be avoided, but it is difficult to specify the dynamics of the process at this point, said the Minister.
