The Serbian Ministry of Culture stated today that Minister Nebojsa Bradic, his advisors Zoran Hamovic and Goran Markovic and Serbian Ambassador to Greece Dragan Zupanjevac visited the Hilandar monastery.
According to the statement issued by the Ministry, Bradic said at the occasion that with the completion of the roof and the work done to renovate the Great Lodge a lot has been done to repair the damage done by the fire that broke out at the monastery in 2004.
The Minister was informed about the results achieved so far and further steps. The Ministry has provided RSD 50 million for reconstruction.
Bradic talked with the brethren at the monastery and also the experts who are working on the reconstruction project. It was agreed at the occasion that the priorities for the near future will be completion of repairs and reconstruction, followed by work on the interior of the building.
He announced that the funding of reconstruction works will continue as planned, adding that the funds are being used prudently and rationally.
Bradic announced that the Ministry of Culture will look at the possibilities of procuring non-budgetary funds to speed up the reconstruction of the monastery on Mount Athos.
The fire at the Hilandar monastery broke out on the night of March 3, 2004 and according to previous estimates reconstruction will cost more than €25 million and will last ten years.
The largest portion of funds for the monastery’s reconstruction has so far been secured by the Serbian government. The reconstruction works were also aided by the Serbian and Greek Orthodox Churches, adds the statement.
