Problem of long-term refugees must be solved

Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic today met with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres to discuss the problem of long-term refugees, as Serbia has still not managed to solve its refugee problem 14 years after the end of the war in Croatia and Bosnia.

The Minister informed the UN High Commissioner about government activities aimed at solving the problem of refugees and IDPs, as well as about numerous open issues between Serbia and Croatia, such as confiscated and destroyed property and missing persons.
Krkobabic pointed out that Serbia cannot speed up the process of solving these issues as Croatia will not cooperate.
Serbia is ready to cooperate as it considers these problems to be large obstacles on both Serbia and Croatia's EU road.
The UN High Commissioner commended Serbia's efforts, voicing his belief that the Croatian side will help find solutions to these problems.
Krkobabic pointed out that the regional conference on refugees and IDPs is of vital importance for Serbia and its neighbouring countries, while Guterres stressed that the UN will actively participate in its organisation in the future.
The two sides agreed that attention must be paid to 70 refugee centres, where people have been living for more than 15 years.
Krkobabic and Guterres agreed last December in Geneva to set up a donation fund, which would help provide better living conditions for refugees and therefore help to close all the refugee centres in Serbia.
The Minister also pointed to the problem of 210,000 IDPs from Kosovo-Metohija living in 17 refugee centres and invited Guterres to do all he can to help provide necessary conditions for the return of IDPs to their homes.
