The signing ceremony was also attended by Serbian Minister of Environment and Spatial Planning Oliver Dulic and Petrovac na Mlavi Municipal President Radisa Dragojevic. The donation will be used to purchase vehicles and equipment for recycling waste.
Dulic said that the “Let’s Clean Serbia” initiative is producing good results and has managed to resolve some of the most serious environmental problems in more than 57 municipalities across Serbia.
He said that the Ministry has managed to resolve the problems of removing unofficial garbage disposal sites and to improve utility infrastructure.
We have invested more than RSD 500 million in purchasing utility equipment and cleaning the disposal sites, said Dulic, adding that nearly 5,000 people have found jobs as a result of these public works.
He said that he expects that all of Belgrade will soon receive garbage containers for recycling waste, adding that owing to the Japanese donation, people in Petrovac na Mlavi will now have the opportunity to show a responsible attitude towards their environment.
Dulic said that the citizens of Petrovac na Mlavi will be able to separate PET wrapping material and prevent it from ending up at fly tips, river beds or on roadsides.
The Japanese Ambassador said that this donation is also to help support the development of local tourism and expressed hope it will help improve the environmental awareness of locals as well as promote friendly relations between the two countries.
Director of Izvor Radovan Rakovic said that Petrovac na Mlavi is a small municipality with limited economic possibilities, but this fact does not lessen its responsibility to the environment.
The donation we received from the government of Japan will help us protect the environment from further pollution, said Rakovic.
Japan’s total donations to Serbia over the past ten years have reached over €200 million.
