Dacic meets with former interior ministers, co-ministers

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic met today with former ministers and co-ministers of the interior Milisav Lukic, Viobran Stanojevic, Dusan Mihajlovic, Radmilo Bogdanovic, Stevan Nikcevic, Slobodan Tomovic and Bozo Prelevic.

The aim of the meeting was to exchange opinions and experiences in order to further improve work and reform in the Interior Ministry and police.

Dacic said that the aim of the Ministry is to make the police efficient and modern and to respond to the requirements of these times.

I think that the job we are doing is very responsible and that everyone with know-how, information and experience in this area should work together in the best interests of the state and its citizens, in order to fight crime and keep stable public peace and order, he said.

He invited former heads of the police to offer their advice, experience and concrete assistance for certain projects.

On behalf of the former police ministers, Bozo Prelevic thanked the Minister and said that this initial meeting is an excellent and atypical move.

Prelevic added that there are many experts within the police that could help a lot with their knowledge and experience.

Former interior minister Radmilo Bogdanovic warned that recent terrorist attacks in the south of Serbia have the same pattern as those in the past and added that if they are not tackled they will re-occur in Presevo and Bujanovac.

The same happened in 1968 in Prizren, then in 1981 in Pristina, he said, warning that the terrorists are slowly becoming more organised.

Bogdanovic noted that state bodies must be more energetic in their efforts to preserve stability and security in Kosovo, pointing out that terrorist must be aware that their activities will be punished, as they are illegal.

Dacic said that Serbia will stay calm and refrain from undertaking aggressive measures against Albanian provocation.

We are ready to cooperate, he said, recalling that the Serbian police employ many Albanians, particularly in Presevo.

He pointed out that human rights of both Serbs and Albanians must be respected, adding that as the leader of the police force he will continue fighting organised crime and terrorism and as a Deputy Prime Minister he will do all it can to help establish a political dialogue.

Dacic noted that on the one hand all those who have committed crimes must be brought to justice, but also that every policeman must be aware of the limits of his authority.

Dacic said he called upon the municipal presidents of Presevo and Bujanovac to cooperate with the Serbian police over the suppression of crime and terrorism in southern Serbia.

Investigations concerning the recent attacks on the police in southern Serbia are underway and all information will be forwarded to representatives of the municipalities of Presevo and Bujanovac.
