At the press conference Djelic reiterated that Universiade can be considered as Serbia’s triumph. Although, from a financial point of view this year’s Universiade has been pretty frugal, Belgrade has managed to set high standards when it comes to the event organisation. We have spent €75 million, thus not overstepping the budget.
The Minister recalled that Thailand spent €300 million for the organisation of the previous Universiade, China, the next host, has announced a €720 million investment and Russia, which will host Universiade in 2013, will set aside around €640 million.
Djelic specified that two-thirds of the money was been provided from the state budget, 25% by Belgrade and 10% from the Vojvodina budget.
A total of 53 sports halls have been renovated and two modern athletics tracks have been constructed, said the Minister, adding that expensive equipment will remain in Serbia after Universiade.
Djelic pointed out that 10.000 volunteers and 5,000 other people have helped in the organisation of Universiade, noting that 8.600 sportsmen competed in 15 sports covering 203 individual events.
A total of 1,467 medals have been won and 60 countries broadcast the event, said Minister Djelic, stressing that around 500,000 spectators attended the competition.
The Serbian swimmer who won two bronze medals said that the Serbian team gave their all, adding that she hopes that they will win more medals at the next Universiade.
The Serbian team is in 10th place according to medals won with a total of 19, composed of five gold, five silver and nine bronze medals.
Djelic said that this is a record for Serbia, adding that Serbia is among the top 10 countries.
Assistant Minister for Youth and Sport Vojislav Tabacki said that he is proud of the good organisation of the Universiade. He expressed his gratitude to the Serbian government and to various sports federations for their support.
The Deputy Prime Minister today presented certificates of appreciation to all those who took part in organising the Universiade, members of the Universiade Belgrade 2009 organising committee, mayors of the cities in which competitions were held and to the youngest participant, Ana Kostadinovic, who opened the event together with Manchester United football player Nemanja Vidic.
