At a press conference presenting the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights’ work, held at the Serbian government building, Karadzic said that the Ministry has achieved a lot when it comes to the protection and promotion of human and minority rights.
The State Secretary noted that the Ministry is working hard on preventing discrimination, facing up to the past and therefore respecting the rights of victims and promoting the position of the national Roma minority.
The Ministry will pay special attention to economic and social rights, as well as the rights of single mothers, women and children during the upcoming period, he said.
According to him, the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights is cooperating with other ministries over the implementation of international obligations, thus presenting Serbia as a country which highly respects human rights.
Our greatest problems are long-lasting court proceedings and non-implementation of judicial decisions, he stressed, noting that important steps towards the realisation of Serbian legislation have already been taken.
He recalled that the Anti-Discrimination Law was adopted in February while in July the government adopted the Report on Implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.
Assistant Minister Petar Antic said that after the government adopted the strategy for the promotion of the Roma, the Ministry drafted an action plan for the implementation of this strategy for the period 2009-2011.
Antic recalled that the government adopted the Bill on National Minorities Councils and the Decree establishing the National Minorities Council.
Assistant Minister Slavoljub Caric, who is the Serbian representative at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, said that in 32 cases the state paid out a total of €88,100, while court expenses amounted to €17,615.
