He recalled that the promotion of university sports is also in line with the Bologna Declaration, adding that the Education Ministry is financing their development through university sport federations.
We support all student competitions held in our country, said the Minister, noting that his Ministry invested RSD 550 million for equipping the University Village.
This meeting clearly shows that we should continue working together in order to achieve our goal and that is the promotion of sports and education as a vital part of everyone’s life, as well as the society in general, concluded the Minister.
Minister of Youth and Sports Snezana Samardzic-Markovic pointed out that the Universiade is a great opportunity for Serbia to present itself in the best possible way.
Samardzic-Markovic stressed that last year the government adopted the Sport Development Strategy from 2009 until 2013 thanks to which the development plan in this area was systematically drafted.
The goal is to create conditions for the development of physically and mentally healthy personalities through sport, since that is the base from which top sportspeople are recruited, the Minister said.
Chancellor of the Belgrade University Branko Kovacevic said that the Universiade is a very important event, adding that the role of sport and physical activity is an indispensable element in the lives of students.
Kovacevic stressed the importance of cooperation among sport organisations and universities in order to include sport in the education system.
He also noted that the task of the education today is to improve the country’s economic development, adding that the faculty degree must be a guarantee of employment.
FISU President George Killian congratulated Belgrade and Serbia for last night’s magnificent opening ceremony, stressing that Belgrade is now the meeting place of future world leaders.
Athletes have all the characteristics of world leaders – they are creative, they have the team spirit and the wish to compete. These are the qualities we need in the entire world, Killian stressed.
Participants of the FISU conference were also greeted by Dean of the Faculty for Sport and Physical Education Dusan Mitic.
