Serbian police ready to take part in EU peace missions

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic today stated that the Serbian police are ready to take part in EU police peacekeeping missions.

At the meeting with members of the Ministry of the Interior who are to be engaged in the UN peace mission in Haiti, Dacic said that this issue has already been discussed with top EU officials.

He stressed it is important for Serbia’s rating to have well-trained and equipped professional police officers who can set an example for other countries.

Dacic noted that participation of the Serbian police in peace missions is important for securing the position in the region, Europe and the world for both the Ministry of the Interior and Serbia, adding that the Serbian police were among the best in such missions.

He recalled that they took part in the work of the Centre of Excellence for Stability Police Units in Vicenza, Italy.

To police members scheduled to take part in the Haiti mission Dacic wished success in their work, advising them to present Serbia in the best way.

I am certain that the police members taking part in the Haiti mission will receive the highest UN grades, the Minister stressed.

In the peacekeeping police mission in Haiti five Serbian police officers will take part, including one woman, chief police inspector Biljana Lazarevic.

Lazarevic will be in charge of the second contingent of the Serbian police in this mission. She has already participated in similar missions in Liberia in 2004.

Members of the Anti-Terrorist Unit, the Gendarmerie and the Protection Unit will be taking part in the Haiti peace mission.

Since 2003 as many as 23 members of the Serbian police took part in the peace mission in Liberia, where currently six Serbian police officers are deployed.

By taking part in UN peacekeeping missions, Serbia is fulfilling international obligations it took upon itself when it signed and ratified international legal documents.
