EU help towards Serbian budget of €100m

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic reached an agreement today in Brussels with EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn about the terms and conditions for Serbia receiving financial support of €100 million.
After the meeting with Rehn, Djelic said that the matter will be discussed at an IPA committee session on July 3.
He said that he expects that Rehn will visit Serbia on July 3 to sign the financial arrangement, adding that this reflects the fact that the EU is very supportive of Serbia.
It was agreed that the financial assistance will be based on the conditions related to the implementation of the agreement with the IMF on the one hand and the implementation of EU laws on the other hand, he said.
Djelic announced that the assistance will be provided in two tranches of €50 million, specifying that the first amount of money will be set aside in the third quarter of 2009 and the second in the second quarter of next year at the latest.
The financial agreement will make up for reduced tax income. This is the first time in the past ten years that the EU has provided this kind of financial assistance, which is the best proof of the EU’s solidarity with Serbia, concluded Djelic.
