Speaking at a joint press conference, Sutanovac said that Serbia and Cyprus face the same challenges, risks and security threats.
He said that he talked with the Cypriot Defence Minister about cooperation regarding defence and Serbia’s relations with the EU, adding that it was stated at the meeting that the two countries have excellent relations.
Sutanovac said that a security cooperation agreement between Serbia and Cyprus will be initialled in Belgrade and signed later, on his next visit to Cyprus.
The Minister said that Papacostas expressed interest in members of the Cypriot armed forces receiving training at the Serbian Military Academy and Military Medical Academy.
He said that during his visit to Serbia the Cypriot Defence Minister will also visit the Military Academy and the Military Medical Academy as well as the company Jugoimport SDPR where a presentation will be made about Serbian defence industry resources.
Cyprus has had positive experiences regarding the weapons industry of the former Yugoslavia and I am convinced that we will reach mutually beneficial agreements, said Sutanovac.
He said that he informed Papacostas about the Serbian Army’s participation in UN and EU peacekeeping missions in Chad, stressing that peacekeeping is one of the best forms of international military cooperation.
Papacostas said that Serbia is an integral part of Europe for Cyprus and should be able to join the EU without conditions related to the Kosovo issue.
He said that the Kosovo issue is a question of justice and respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty and should have nothing to do with EU membership criteria.
Cyprus will never recognise the unilaterally declared Kosovo independence, as the solution to that problem should be based on the Helsinki Final Act and international law, said Papacostas, adding that the two sides discussed defence policy and education.
Papacostas also mentioned the current situation in Cyprus, stressing that Cyprus is the only country in Europe to be occupied.
We will never forget that Serbia supports the Cypriot government’s stances, as well as Cypriot people when it comes to their unity, stressed that Cypriot Defence Minister and invited Minister Sutanovac to visit Cyprus as soon as possible.
