In an interview with FoNet news agency, Jeremic said that the situation in Kosovo is extremely worrying and difficult, which is a fact mentioned in the UN Secretary General’s report. He said that Serbia will insist that the situation on the ground must be discussed and the problems faced mainly by the non-Albanian population in the southern Serbian province should be talked about.
He said that the upcoming session will be an opportunity to talk at the highest level about the pressures being exerted on countries all over the world to recognise Kosovo.
Jeremic said that Serbia will demand at the Security Council session on June 17 that these attempts stop, bearing in mind that the International Court of Justice has begun to consider the legality of Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence.
As for the first anniversary of the Kosovo Constitution and the recognition that former UN Special Envoy for Kosovo-Metohija Marti Ahtisaari has recently received in Pristina, Jeremic said that it is the best proof that Belgrade’s suspicions were well grounded.
The Minister stressed that Ahtisaari’s aim was to help Kosovo declare independence, but Serbia has managed to halt this process by legal means.
Talking about
the political consensus on visa liberalisation that EU Foreign Ministers reached yesterday, Jeremic pointed out that all state bodies, headed by the Serbian President, are making every effort to meet all the criteria necessary for joining the EU and reaching visa liberalisation.
Serbia’s top priority is to enter the Schengen ‘white list’ and enable its citizens to travel across Europe without any restrictions, said the Minister, stressing that EU Foreign Ministers’ decision is not the final one, so that we should be careful and patient in order to successfully complete our job.
Jeremic reiterated that Serbia will do all it can to have the Transitional Trade Agreement unfrozen as soon as possible.
We are trying to convince all 27 EU member states to reach consensus, as it is a necessary precondition for continuing Serbia’s EU integration, said Minister Jeremic, adding that EU membership is the Serbian government’s top strategic goal.
