EU Foreign Ministers reach consensus on visa liberalisation for Western Balkans

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic said that a meeting of EU foreign ministers reached a political consensus on visa liberalisation for the Western Balkans today in Luxembourg. This decision concerns countries which have fulfilled their conditions for inclusion on to the Schengen white list.

Djelic specified that these countries are Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro.
He stressed that this is the first time that a political decision regarding visa liberalisation by the end of this year has been made at such a high level, adding that that Holland and Belgium both expressed a willingness to consider the partial unblocking of the transitional trade agreement with Serbia.
However, the 25 remaining EU member states insist on the full implementation of the Transitional Trade Agreement, said the Minister, adding that Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz’s speech provoked a two hour discussion at the session.
Djelic pointed out that it was agreed that the upcoming meeting of the EU, scheduled for June 18–19 in Brussels, will also discuss Serbia’s visa liberalisation, which proves that Serbia has a number of allies supporting it on its EU road.
EU Foreign Ministers will recommend that the European Commission abolish visas for all the Balkan countries that have met visa liberalisation criteria by the end of this year.
