Germany supports removal of visa restrictions for Serbia

Serbian First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today after talks with German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble that Germany supports the removal of visa restrictions for Serbian citizens and Serbia’s EU integration.
Dacic, who is on a one day visit to Germany, stated for Tanjug news agency that Schäuble stated that it is the clear stance of his Ministry and of the German government that visa restrictions should be removed as soon as possible if Serbia has met all the criteria from the roadmap for visa liberalisation.
He said that according to the European Commission Serbia has met practically all the criteria, adding that Schäuble is convinced that the European Commission’s decision on the matter will be a positive one. We also discussed a number of other bilateral issues and it was agreed that a police cooperation agreement and a protocol for the implementation of readmission should be prepared as soon as possible, said Dacic, adding that Schäuble has accepted to visit Belgrade to sign these agreements. Talks concerning these matters will also be held with the interior ministries of other EU countries, said Dacic, stressing that it is important that the German government will not oppose a positive decision by the European Commission regarding the removal of visa restrictions. He said that he will discuss all these issues with the interior ministers of Belgium and Sweden within a few days, reminding that Sweden is due to assume EU presidency on July 1. During his visit to Germany, Dacic also talked with German Parliamentary State Secretary at the Interior Ministry Peter Altmaier.
