Djelic visits mammoth skeleton excavation site in Viminacium

Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic today visited the science and research centre Viminacium near Kostolac, where a skeleton of a rare species of mammoth several million years old was recently found.

Djelic said that the female mammoth skeleton is an extraordinary discovery, inviting Serbian citizens to propose a name for the mammoth.
He said Viminacium proves that serious science can become a huge opportunity for Serbia, adding that currently 50–60,000 people visit the archaeological site every year, the goal being to increase the number of visitors to 300,000.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that the Ministry of Science and Technological Development sets aside RSD 15 million for Viminacium, while the plan for 2006–2010 envisages investment of another RSD 350 million in seven other archaeological projects.
Djelic will meet with palaeontologists and archaeologists from the Serbian Archaeological Society, the Archaeological Society of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Archaeology Department at the Faculty of Philosophy, to discuss the state of this scientific remit.
