At a joint press conference Jeremic pointed out that although Hungary has recognised the unilaterally declared Kosovo independence, the two countries still have good relations.
Serbia has a lot in common with Hungary, said Jeremic, noting that the Serbian government will make every effort to maintain good relations with its neighbour, despite the fact that it has recognised Kosovo independence.
The Minister stressed that Kosovo independence is a breach of international law, adding that Serbia is doing all it can to prevent its further recognition.
Jeremic said that although this is an open issue between Serbia and all the countries that recognised the independence of its southern province, we will try to find ways to continue cooperating with those countries.
Jeremic said that he talked with Balazs about the European future of the Balkans as well as about ways in which Hungary can help regarding the EU integration process, which remains the Serbian government’s central strategic priority and top national interest.
Balazs said that Hungary has recognised Kosovo, as a majority of EU countries have done, but has taken no further steps. He said that he hopes that the issue will be settled and that it will not affect relations between Serbia and Hungary.
He said that Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic’s visit to Hungary, scheduled for July 6, is extremely important, adding that there are many areas in which cooperation between Serbia and Hungary must be initiated.
The Hungarian Foreign Minister said that an agreement on a joint transborder trade regime could be signed; adding that it is possible that an Open Skies agreement could be reached and that flights between Budapest and Belgrade could be resumed.
