Agreement on police cooperation between Serbia, Croatia signed

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Ivica Dacic and Croatian Interior Minister Tomislav Karamarko signed today in Rijeka an agreement on police cooperation in order to intensify the fight against international crime, terrorism and corruption.

By signing this agreement both the Serbian and Croatian police clearly show that the two countries will not give refuge to criminals, said Dacic, inviting other countries to join the fight against ogranised crime.

The Minister pointed out that fighting organised crime is a precondition for EU integration, adding that regional cooperation is necessary as the criminal groups are comprised of people from all former Yugoslav countries.

The regional centre for the fight against organised crime would enable us monitor the situation in the region and act in time, said Minister Dacic.

He said that the centre’s headquarters may be in Belgrade and that the Head of the centre may be from Croatia or vice versa, adding that this is the best possible way of exchanging information and setting an example to other countries in the region.

The issues of international crime, terrorism and corruption must be above political relations because the lives of our citizens depend on that, Dacic said adding that the stability of the entire region depends on cooperation between Croatia and Serbia.

Dacic also said it was proposed that judicial organs and police representatives from both countries meet and discuss the war crimes issue in order to facilitate travel and prevent incidents such as arrests based on out of date wanted notices.

Karamarko stressed that cooperation between the Serbian and Croatian police is successful and must remain constant and not endangered by political relations.

The Agreement on Police Cooperation envisages appointment of liaison officers in Zagreb and Belgrade, enables witness protection programmes, as well as exchange of information, staff and knowledge.

Dacic and Karamarko today also signed the Agreement on Joint Fight against Illegal Migrations which opens the door for the implementation of the Law on readmission.
