Serbian, European Commission representatives to hold visa talks

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic stated that final elements of the visa liberalisation process for Serbia will be examined at the plenary session of the Enhanced Permanent Dialogue between the European Commission and Serbia, which will be held on May 12 in Belgrade.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Belgrade City Assembly, at which the “Travel to Europe 2009” competition was announced, Djelic said that he expects that by the middle of June the European Commission and the EU Council of Ministers will make a decision concerning the removal of visa restrictions for Serbian citizens.
He said that the meeting is particularly important because it is the last of its kind before the EU annual report concerning countries which wish to join the EU.
He said that judging by statements made by European officials recently, Serbia and Macedonia are the countries that are most likely to be added to the Schengen “white list” by the end of this year.
Djelic pointed out that representatives from several ministries will participate in the dialogue, adding that the meeting will also be attended by Pierre Mirel, Director for Western Balkans at the European Commission Directorate General for Enlargement.
The Minister noted that Serbia’s EU integration has been hampered due to the global financial crisis, adding that Serbia must cooperate with its EU partners in order to set the date for submitting its EU candidacy.
Djelic recalled that despite the crisis EU financial help has not been reduced and that Serbia is the only country in the region to negotiate on EU pre-accession assistance, worth €100 million.
The competition, organised by the European Movement in Serbia, will enable 200 top students to travel around the EU in July and August.
