Dacic marks May Day with police union representatives

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic today marked the traditional May Day picnic with associates and representatives from police unions at the Makis police training centre.

Dacic said that International Labour Day is an opportunity to draw attention to the difficult social and economic position of police employees, who perform highly risky and responsible tasks in the fight against crime for a salary bordering on the state average.
He recalled that since 1990s over 1,000 police officers lost their lives on duty, adding that the Ministry of the Interior will mark May Day every year in order to encourage everyone to fight together for the better position and status of police officers.
Dacic said that this is a difficult time, with the crisis reflecting on the material status of the Ministry employees, stressing the necessity to strive together to mitigate the effects of the crisis.
He recalled that the Ministry signed a protocol on cooperation with the unions, but added that cooperation has not yet reached the right level, as well as that not all union demands can be met immediately.
He said current regulations, according to which a police officers accused of a criminal act are dismissed before it is determined whether they are guilty or not, should be changed, adding that the presumption of innocence is treated differently with police officers than with ordinary citizens.
Apart from Dacic, Police Chief Milorad Veljovic, president of the Independent Serbian Union Ljubisav Orbovic and representatives from police unions attended the May Day picnic.
