Krkobabic hands over keys to refugees

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic today handed over keys to flats for temporary accommodation to 18 refugee families from Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Krkobabic said at the occasion that this small gesture of help cannot solve all the problems faced by the refugees, adding that this is an effort by the government to solve at least one of their problems amidst the difficult conditions resulting from the global economic crisis.
He said that more than 1,000 refugee families in Serbia will be provided with accommodation or help for building or renovating their houses.
Krkobabic said that keys to the rest of the 18 flats in the building in Ub will be handed over within a month.
He said that efforts are being made to facilitate the return of refugees who want to go back to their homes, adding that resolving this problem with Croatia presents huge problems because there seems to be a lack of political will on the Croatian side.
He said that in December last year the Serbian government also launched an initiative at international level to resolve this problem.
He said that there are some 8,000 refugees living in difficult living conditions in centres in Serbia.
The Serbian Commission for Refugees used budgetary funds to purchase 36 flats in Ub from the company MPI Todorovic from Valjevo in 2000 for providing accommodation to refugees. However, there were technical problems due to which it was impossible to move refugee families into the building.
In July 2008 the Commission set aside funds from its own budget for additional construction works and now the building has been completely renovated and is ready for use.
The ceremony for handing over keys was also attended by Serbian Commissioner for Refugees Vladimir Cucic and representatives of the municipality of Ub and the UNHCR.
