Therefore, the Health Ministry initiated a plan for fighting cancer.
The Council of Europe gives clear recommendations to member countries to introduce obligatory screenings for the population in order to discover tumours at an early stage.
The Minister pointed out that the entire society must take responsibility for the implementation of this programme, which implies cooperation between all sectors.
The national programme promotes a healthy lifestyle and coordinated approach to the prevention and control of malignant diseases. Its aim is to decrease the number of people affected by such diseases, as well as prolong and improve the quality of their lives.
Serbian President Boris Tadic, who agreed to finance the implementation of this programme, told the participants of the conference that the efficient prevention of malignant and other serious diseases cannot be carried out if citizens are not well enough informed .
Tadic noted that although Serbia is facing economic and technological problems, it can still improve the health education of its citizens, as well as its health system.
People should change their eating habits, said President Tadic, adding that Serbia must help fight against unhealthy food, smoking, alcoholism and other drug addictions.
