Djelic meets with delegation of EU Enlargement, Economic and Financial Affairs Directorates

Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic met today with a joint delegation of the EU Enlargement Directorate and the Economic and Financial Affairs Directorate to discuss a package of financial support worth nearly €100 million that the EU approved for Serbia for this and next year in late March.
They will discuss the purpose of funds and conditions for budget support to Serbia, as well as a list of projects for IPA 2009.
Djelic stated that negotiations with European Commision representatives started today on getting the support for Serbia’s budget in two tranches.
The first tranche should arrive at the beginning of the third quarter of this year, while the second should come at the beginning of the first quarter of next year, he said.
This will be direct support to the Serbian budget, but on the condition that Serbia continues with internal reforms and implementation of the IMF programme, Djelic said.
The crucial conditions will probably be the adoption of the National Plan for EU integration, the adoption of laws and employment of people who will work according to European standards.
As soon as the European Commission delegation visits Serbia its financial assistance will be precisely defined, explained Djelic, adding that it will comprise two parts; the first amount of money will be set aside from EU pre-accession funds and the second will be provided as a very favourable loan.
He stressed that Serbia is the only country in the region to receive this kind of help.
Minister Djelic concluded that in times of crisis the EU clearly shows that it supports Serbia’s EU aspirations, adding that it is of major importance for Serbia to gain the support of all international institutions.
