Japan, China interested in investing in Serbia

Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic today stated that Japan and China are interested in loan investments in Serbia, adding that favourable loans from these countries will help construct the Zemun-Borca Bridge in Belgrade amongst other things.

Appearing on Radio Television Serbia, Djelic said that Japan and China are aiming for a greater presence in central and Eastern Europe, adding that further investment by them in Serbian products would be beneficial to them because of Serbia’s free trade agreements with the EU, Russia and other countries.
He noted that favourable loans imply rates of 2–3%, with a 20 to 30 year repayment period and long grace periods.
Djelic said that Japan is most interested in the desulfurisation project at the Nikola Tesla power plant, which will help clean up the environment as well as enable the construction of a plaster factory.
As for mass bankruptcy of small businesses in Serbia, Djelic stressed that on May 11 a top delegation from the European Investment Bank will visit Serbia to sign a new €250 million loan for SMEs.
We are trying to attract a number of companies, he said, noting that the EU and the World Bank will strengthen their support for Serbia’s budget and that after this revision there should not be additional changes regarding financing.
Djelic announced that during the upcoming days a government amendment will be published in the Official Gazette, according to which vehicles with foreign licence plates will be allowed to be registered under the same terms as other vehicles over the next three months.
The Deputy Prime Minister said he supports the idea of a reduced number of ministries, adding that the key reaction necessary to combat the global crisis is the reduction of expenses by €1 billion.
