Serbia to boost economic cooperation with Japan

Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration and Minister of Science and Technological Development Bozidar Djelic today stated that the main aim of his visit to Japan is to help develop technological and scientific cooperation between the two countries and attract Japanese investors to Serbia.
Djelic, who is currently on a working visit to Japan, told the Tanjug news agency that the Serbian delegation is to start negotiations concerning a favourable loan, worth from €100 million to €200 million, for the development of Serbian thermoelectric power plants and the prevention of pollution.
Djelic pointed out that the Serbian government would like to increase the possibility of Serbian scientists attending Japanese universities.
Japan uses cutting edge technologies and makes up 20% of the world’s scientific achievements a year, said Djelic, adding that the development of scientific cooperation with this country is of vital importance for Serbia.
Djelic today held a lecture on the EU integration process at the Ayoama Gakuin University and is to meet with representatives from the Tokyo and Kyoto Universities, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and the Research Centre for Information Security.
As for drawing Japanese investors to Serbia, Djelic noted that Serbia’s clearly defined economic policy would be a great advantage.
Large international companies like Fiat, Telenor, Siemens and Michelin are already operating in Serbia, he said, noting that Serbia has a favourable trade agreement with Russia and soon with Belarus and Turkey as well.
Serbia is also the only country in the region that has already made a deal with the IMF, he said.
He also recalled that Japanese investments in Serbia amounted to $100 million, while last year’s imports from Japan amounted to $260 million, which is small compared with Serbia’s imports from China which amount to $2 billion.
Djelic announced that Serbia intends to build stronger economic ties with Tokyo.
He will also meet with representatives from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japanese Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) as well as from various Japanese institutes and universities.
Djelic will also meet with representatives of JTI, Itochu and Sony.
He also announced that Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic will visit Japan this year and President Boris Tadic next year.
Djelic also announced stronger political and diplomatic connections with Tokyo.
