Ivica Dacic at today's press conference
Dacic told a press conference that the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Infrastructure, in cooperation with experts, finished the drafting of the regulation.
He expressed hope that the document will be supported both by parliament and the public.
Dacic stated that 897 people died in traffic accidents last year, including 36 children, while the material damage amounted to RSD 2.7 billion.
The aim of this regulation is to halve the number of deaths on roads over the next three years, he said, noting that the aim is not rigorous fines but safety and preventive action.
He also said that the two ministries are open to suggestions through amendments.
Dacic said that the speed limit in inhabited areas will be 50 km, instead of 60 km, per hour.
The new regulations will not allow Serbian citizens to drive vehicles with foreign number plates, including vehicles with number plates from Montenegro.
Dacic also commented on speculation that some mistakes were made during the printing of new biometric passports by saying that the authorities in charge had received no complaints from citizens so far that they had had problems on their travels with the new passports, but noted that this will be examined.
He recalled that 400,000 new passports have been issued so far by the Institute for Manufacturing Banknotes of the National Bank of Serbia.
