Considerable progress towards visa liberalisation

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic today said that there may be considerable progress towards visa liberalisation for Serbia in the second half of 2009.

Following a meeting with European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin, Dacic told a joint press conference that Serbia has reasons to anticipate a positive stance from the European Commission regarding this issue.
He noted that Serbia believes it has already established full cooperation with the Hague tribunal and expects the report of the tribunal’s Chief Prosecutor to be positive.
The Minister reiterated that Serbia is aware of the fact that for many EU and other countries there cannot be full cooperation unless the indictees are arrested and extradited, adding that this is huge obstacle for unfreezing the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) and applying for EU candidacy.
Dacic also said that the Ministry of the Interior and other Serbian state organs have fulfilled almost all conditions stated in the road map for visa liberalisation which Serbia signed last year with the European Commission, adding that this is why it expects a positive stance from Brussels.
Dacic and Kacin agreed that Serbia has made substantial progress in fulfilling the terms for visa liberalisation, appealing that the SAA be unfrozen.
Kacin said that according to Hague tribunal’s Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz, Serbia is still not fully cooperating with The Hague, but he noted that the SAA needs to be unfrozen, especially the part that refers to economy.
He expressed his expectation that Serbia will fully cooperate with the tribunal, which includes the arrest and extradition of the two remaining fugitives.
Kacin also congratulated the Serbian government on the implementation of the road map for visa liberalisation, noting that there are realistic chances for this plan to be completed successfully.
