Sostar told a press conference that Belgrade’s winning this candidature will mark our country’s return to its place on the world stage, and it will be an opportunity for us to show our hospitality, friendship and desire to always be amongst the best.
The visit of the officials from the International University Sports Federation (FISU) is the most difficult exam for us, he added, but it nonetheless gives us hope that Belgrade could really host this contest.
The FISU will make its final decision on which of three candidate cities will be the host on January 10, 2005, Sostar said.
FISU President George Killian said that apart from Belgrade, the applicant cities for the hosting the event are Poznan, Poland, and Monterey, Mexico. He said that the FISU delegation has visited Poznan and Belgrade so far. He commended Belgrade for its enthusiasm and desire to be the host city for Universiade 2009.
President of the Serbia-Montenegrin University Sports Federation Sinisa Jasnic, who is also one of 23 members of the FISU executive committee, voiced hope that Belgrade will be awarded the games on January 10 so as to further enrich the city’s sports infrastructure.
Belgrade’s big advantage lies in the competitions organised thus far as well as from the support state institutions are giving, Jaksic said, promising that if Belgrade is awarded the games, it will provide a high level of organisational services.
