RSD 100 million for renovation of sports facilities for Universiade

Belgrade, 30 March 2009

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration and head of the Universiade Belgrade 2009 organising committee Bozidar Djelic attended today the signing of contracts worth a total of RSD 100 million between the organisers of the Universiade and directors of sports facilities.

Minister of Youth and Sport Snezana Samardzic-Markovic also attended the signing of the contracts between General Director of the company UB 2009 Zoran Jovanovic and directors of the facilities where training and competitions will be held.

Djelic said at the occasion that it was agreed that all works will be finished by June 15, adding that this is a very important step towards the successful organization of a major sports event such as the Universiade.

Funds for the Universiade are fairly humble and we all wanted to allocate as much as possible for the event but RSD 100 million will be invested in sports facilities which is very positive for amateur sports-people, said Djelic.

He explained that the funds will also cover facilities belonging to the Red Star football club and sports association Partizan but smaller facilities such as Sumice and Tasmajdan, as well as facilities outside Belgrade, in Zrenjanin, Smederevo, Indjia, Novi Sad and Stara Pazova.

Djelic recalled that the Universiade is the largest sport event after Olympics and that 10,000 students from 140 countries will arrive to Belgrade, as well as several thousand delegation members and diplomatic and media representatives.

Minister of Youth and Sport Snezana Samardzic-Markovic stressed that sport is a good way to promote national identity and Universiade is an opportunity to confirm that Serbs are a nation of sport lovers.

General Director of Universiade 2009 Zoran Jovanovic said that agreements signed today imply frameworks for business cooperation in the next three months.

As for the athletic race course at the Red Star stadium, he said that a contract was signed with Beograd Put contractor for preparatory works.

We are within the limits of the planned dynamics and the deadline for works is end-April, said Jovanovic adding that 21 days without rainfall is needed for the completion of works, but added that there is a back-up solution.
