Sagem begins construction of factory in Nis

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic, head of the French company Sagem Telecommunications CEO Patrick Sevian and Mayor of Nis Milos Simonovic today signed a cooperation protocol according to which Sagem will construct a factory for electricity meters in Nis.

After the signing of the protocol Djelic said that Sagem will invest €1 million during the first year and a further €6 million to equip the factory over a period of five years.
He said that nearly 250 workers will be employed in the factory at the beginning, while Sagem plans to establish a production and distribution centre for electricity metres in Nis, from where they will be exported to Bulgaria, Greece, Russia and former Soviet republics.
Djelic said that Sagem’s turnover last year stood at €1.6 billion and it employs more than 6,500 people around the world, adding that besides setting up the production of electricity metres the company is also interested in investing in broadband internet and digitalization.
Djelic said that four years ago Sagem began business in Tunisia with a factory that employed 40 workers and now it is a company with more than 3,500 employees.
He said that it is good for Serbia that one of the leading electricity meter manufacturers is present in the country, adding that Sagem, which from today has become a domestic electricity meter producer, will compete with other domestic producers for tenders which will be announced in the future by the Serbian electricity industry EPS for replacing old meters with new ones.
Sagem will not get special treatment at future tenders, said Djelic, adding that the competition will be fair, open and transparent.
He said that according to plans Serbia should replace more than 3 million electricity meters by 2017.
Djelic said that the signing of the protocol is an important step for Serbia, Nis and the electronics company EI Nis, especially because this investment is being made during a crisis.
Mayor of Nis Milos Simonovic said that to begin with Sagem will use the premises of EI Nis, while a Greenfield investment in EI Nis property is being planned for a later date.
Sagem CEO Patrick Sevian said that the head office of the new company, which has already been established, will be in Nis, adding that Sagem decided to invest in Nis because of the human resources offered by the city.
Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic and Chief of the European Commission’s Delegation Josep Lloveras signed a financial agreement today in Pirot, concerning cross-border cooperation with Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary worth €50 million, which will be implemented over the next three years.
Djelic concluded that Pirot, as well as the whole of Southern Serbia, will benefit from this agreement.
