Speaking at the opening of a conference titled “Adult Education – an opportunity for Serbia’s socio-economic progress”, the Minister said that the law is expected to be on the parliamentary agenda for October. He recalled that the Serbian government had adopted an action plan for implementing the national strategy for developing adult education for the period from 2009 to 2010.
He explained that the action plan and the strategy for developing adult education which was adopted in 2006 are important for creating a culture of learning, social organization, a knowledge-based economy and the improvement of the capabilities of adults.
The Minister said that establishing cooperation between social partners regarding adult education and the formation of an agency for expert education and adult education is a priority for satisfying the educational needs of those older than 18.
The Ministry of Education created a national report on education of adults in Serbia which was submitted to UNESCO for the 6th International Conference on Adult Education, “CONFINTEA VI”, which will be held in Brazil in May, he said.
Obradovic stated that Serbia should increase funds for education, which currently amount to 3.5% of its GDP, while UNESCO’s recommendation is 6% of a country’s GDP.
The conference was organised by the Ministry of Education and the Adult Education Association, with the help of the Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association (DVV) and the European Training Foundation (ETF).
