At a press conference regarding the adoption of a national strategy on palliative care, held at the at the Tanjug international press centre, Milosavljevic recalled that on March 5 the government adopted the strategy for the development of the national health system and an instrument for mobilizing not only the social sector but all segments of society involved in palliative care programmes.
He pointed out that in the upcoming period palliative care will be organised in certain hospitals, which will therefore be provided with adequate equipment and educated staff.
Minister recalled that the City Institute for Gerontology and Home Treatment and Care and the NGO Belhospis are currently taking care of the ageing population.
Independent advisor to the Health Minister Dubravka Saranovic-Racic said that palliative care teams will comprise a home doctor, five nurses, a psychologist, psychiatrist, physiologist, social worker and a church representative, who will first receive special training.
The strategy on palliative care, a document of national importance, is part of the strategy for the development of the national health system and an instrument for mobilizing not only the social sector but all segments of society involved in palliative care programmes.
The strategy was adopted because of a growing need for palliative care among the ageing population of Serbia and an increase in the number of patients with cardiovascular diseases, malignant diseases, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, etc.
