Serbia to apply for EU membership this year

Following a meeting with British Foreign Minister David Miliband and Minister for EU Integration Caroline Flint, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic stated that Serbia will officially apply for EU membership this year.

Flint noted that Great Britain will continue supporting Serbia’s EU aspirations, adding that Serbia has made progress concerning cooperation with the Hague tribunal.
According to Djelic, Great Britain advocates for the unfreezing of the Transitional Trade Agreement.
Djelic asked Great Britain to support Serbia’s stance that the IMF, World Bank, European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development should help the Western Balkans to surmount the global financial crisis.
Serbia recommended that part of a €24.5 billon loan is set aside for banks in Serbia and other Western Balkan countries.
Serbia will also ask these international institutions to help finance the construction of the road and railway in Corridor 10, as well as energy projects.
Djelic added that Serbia and Great Britain are to sign an agreement on cooperation concerning the fight against organised crime.
He pointed out that Great Britain, along with France, Germany and Austria, is the fourth country where Serbia has started to issue the new biometric passport.
Over 330,000 biometric passports have been issued, he said, noting that over a million passports will be issued by the year’s end.
This is one of crucial conditions for inclusion in the Schengen white list, Djelic said, expressing hope that the EU will grant Serbia access to this list by the end of the year.
