Stronger links among Balkan countries needed to fight organised crime

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today in Sofia that stronger links between police departments in the region is needed to fight organised crime and corruption and make the Balkans a part of Europe in which these issues will be brought to a minimum.

Following a meeting with Bulgarian Minister of the Interior Mihail Mikov, Dacic announced that the protocol on trilateral cooperation in the fight against organised crime, signed by the Serbian, Bulgarian and Romanian governments, will soon be implemented, which will be most evident in the fight against terrorism, as well as cross-border cooperation between police departments.
He stressed that Serbia will bear the major portion of the fight against terrorism, adding that the Ministry of the Interior is planning a joint exercise between police departments from the three countries in the form of a simulated terrorist attack on the Djerdap hydroelectric power plant.
Speaking about bilateral cooperation with Bulgaria, Dacic said that an agreement on small-border transport will soon be signed, while work on the construction of new border crossings will also begin.

He voiced his belief that police cooperation between Serbia and Bulgaria, particularly regarding the fight against organised crime, will be improved.
Dacic said that relations between Serbia and Bulgaria are of vital importance for the entire region, specifying that the two sides should cooperate in political and economic terms as well.
Mikov pointed out that Bulgaria supports Serbia’s EU integration, adding that he himself will vote for Serbia’s visa liberalisation and inclusion on the Schengen “white list”.
Dacic also met with Bulgarian parliament speaker Georgi Pirinski, Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev and President Georgi Parvanov.
He said that during these talks it was concluded that relations between Bulgaria and Serbia are of vital importance for regional stability and that they are improving.
