Government to discuss economic plans on March 13

Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic announced today on Mt Kopaonik that the government will meet with IMF representatives on March 13 to discuss its developmental strategy and economic plans for 2009.

At the Kopaonik Business Forum 2009, Djelic said that the meeting will be attended by Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Governor of the National Bank of Serbia Radovan Jelasic, Minister of Finance Diana Dragutinovic and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Regional Development Mladjan Dinkic.
He said that the next meeting of the Group of 20, consisting of developed and developing countries, will be held on April 2, adding that by then Serbia will have participated in the Western Balkans’ initiative concerning the provision of financial help for paying off private sector debts.
The meeting is of great importance for both Serbia and the entire region.
In his introductory statement Djelic said that the government should not decrease salaries and pensions, as it would further decrease the purchasing power of Serbian citizens and therefore put the Serbian economy in jeopardy.
The Minister noted that VAT should not be increased.
The government must alter the way it spends money, especially when it comes to the money Serbia receives from international financial institutions and those changes must be obvious in the 2010 budget.
On the second day of the forum government representatives, economists and bankers will present their own stances regarding the influences of macroeconomic policies on Serbia’s development during the global financial crisis.
The participants will be addressed by member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Council Bosko Zivkovic, who will talk about the influence of the global recession on the Serbian economy.
Two panel discussions will also be held to discuss the impact of laws and regulations on the financial sector, as well as the property market in Serbia.
