Day of Gendarmerie marked

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic today stated that the police and the gendarmerie will continue carrying out their tasks, such as preserving public peace and order, defending the country from terrorism and fighting all forms of crime.

Attending the celebration of the Day of the Gendarmerie, held at the gendarmerie headquarters, Dacic said that the Ministry’s task is to help develop a democratic society in Serbia which will guarantee human rights and freedoms.

He said the Serbian police have highly professional, trained specialist units, adding that the Ministry, as well as the whole society, can be proud of them.

Dacic noted that the police perform difficult tasks, which is why the Ministry will keep improving the material status of police members, adding that it will strive also to preserve the memory of those who gave their lives whilst on duty by starting a campaign to raise a monument to police officers who lost their lives on duty.

The Minister said that Serbia and its citizens should fully trust the police, adding that the Gendarmerie’s main goal is to preserve public peace and order, protect the country and provide security.

Dacic stressed it is necessary that members of the Gendarmerie are well equipped and highly trained and that they believe that the state, as well as those who give them orders, will always protect them.

Srdjan Grekulovic, the Deputy Commander of the Gendarmerie, which was first set up in 1860, said that the whole of Serbia can count upon the Gendarmerie, as it is always ready fulfill its obligations.

Grekulovic expressed his high appreciation to Dacic for his support and presented him with a plaque.

The 149th anniversary of the Gendarmerie was also attended by the police chief Milorad Veljovic, former commander of the Gendarmerie Goran Radosavljevic and Head of the National Protection and Rescue Directorate Predrag Maric.
