At a joint press conference with OSCE representatives, Dacic pointed out that an opinion poll shows that the police hold the fourth position concerning citizens’ trust.
The Minister pointed out that the fight against corruption is of vital importance for our society and for the further work of the Interior Ministry.
Minister Dacic and OSCE Chief Ola Urstad agreed that the police reforms must be continued, as well as the exchange of information with neighbouring countries.
Ola Urstad said that research clearly shows that Serbian citizens have high hopes and trust in their police.
According to the opinion poll, carried out in November 2008, 93% of citizens feel that the police must be at the citizens’ disposal above all.
About 55% of people think that the police are corrupt, 37% believes that the police respect human rights and 74% of citizens consider that the police do not have any influence on defining priorities.
About 63% of citizens believe that the police are at their disposal and 70% think that the police make great efforts in the fight against crime and corruption.
Serbian citizens think that local self-governments should have more influence on the police’s work.
The opinion poll was carried out by Strategic Marketing, at the initiative of the OSCE Mission to Serbia.
Dacic reiterated that
police liaison officers will not incur any additional costs, but will contribute to the fight against cross-border crime.
He noted that Serbian liaison officers will be deployed in Serbian embassies and consulates in those countries where there are a large number of Serbian citizens.
Minister Dacic affirmed that the government has discussed the case of student Miladin Kovacevic and pointed out that the information is not confidential.
Dacic explained that the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Justice, which are in charge of this case, suggested that the information should be marked as confidential.
He concluded that the government must set up a security system for documents and decisions.
