At a conference regarding the system for agricultural record keeping, being held in Belgrade, Dragin said that the EBRD will finance the system, which will enable the functioning of public warehouses for storing agricultural products.
He said that the EBRD has not yet determined the amount of money to be provided in this respect, adding that it will depend on the banking sector and farmers’ interest in such securities.
The Minister specified that the parliament must first adopt the law on the public warehouses for storing agricultural products, which may occur by the end of March.
Dragin pointed out that public warehouses will help farmers to sell their goods at the best possible moment and for the best possible price.
He recalled that according to the draft law, farmers can store grain, fruit and vegetables at public warehouses.
Mettetal specified that the EBRD is ready to set aside from €50 to €100 million in this respect.
He recalled that the EBRD has helped the setting up of such systems in Slovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Russia and pointed out that they proved to be successful, as it has enabled liquidity of agricultural systems in countries in which farmers cannot use their land to obtain loans.
Mettetal said that Serbia has a huge, but largely unexploited potential concerning food production.
