Speaking on Radio Television Serbia Cvetkovic said that living standards will not improve in 2009 but they will not be worse than in 2008.
He said that the government will not insist on saving jobs that are unprofitable, adding that efforts will be made to increase overall employment levels.
He stressed that the government has prepared a strategy to deal with the global financial crisis and the draft strategy may be viewed at the Serbian government’s website.
He explained that this document contains a range of measures, assessments, analyses and answers to questions about the financial crisis.
He reiterated that the government has three principles, of which one is unity, according to which all political parties as well as other interested groups must make joint efforts to deal with the crisis.
The second principle is solidarity, which means that the whole of society will bear the burden of the crisis equally; those who have more will have to bear more and those who are disadvantaged will be helped as much as possible.
He said that the third principle is continuity, which means that the government will monitor the crisis and take steps in accordance with fresh developments.
Cvetkovic recalled that salaries to budget beneficiaries will be increased in line with the planned inflation rate, which in fact means that the salaries will remain at the same level as in the previous year.
Speaking about the process of European integration he said that there are problems concerning certain laws that parliament should have passed, because of difficulties in the functioning of parliament.
He said that there have been positive indications in that respect during the past few days.
The Prime Minister said that an assessment of the damage caused by the halt in the gas supply has not been made yet, adding that this will be done when the current situation is over.
He said that various analyses will be carried out and it will be possible to make a proper assessment once the crisis is over, adding that it should be kept in mind that it is not just the public that has been affected but industry as well.
