Army professionalisation to intensify in 2009

Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac said today that the process of army professionalisation is very important for the state and noted that activities in this field will be intensified in 2009.
Sutanovac said that salaries were increased in the defence system and that significant results have been achieved.
He noted that there are 21,133 workers interested in getting a flat, 14,357 of whom have no housing solution at all.
The process of giving apartments is accessible to the public and transparent, he stressed, noting that 1,247 housing issues have been solved this year, 163 of which through loans.
He said that at least 1,000 more will be solved next year.
Sutanovac recalled that a competition for 2,300 professional soldiers has been announced and that more than 2,100 applied.
He noted that the “Cepotin” military base near Bujanovac has not yet been finished.
Sutanovac said that investment in armament and equipment in 2008 was greater than in the previous three years.
Ten aircraft and four helicopters have been repaired, he said, noting that seven aeroplanes are also being repaired.
The biggest salary in the defence system amounted to RSD 143,082 in November, he said, noting that his assistants earn more then him.
He said that cadets from the military academy now receive payments 150% higher than before.
