In an interview with the weekly NIN Jeremic said that Serbia will make every effort to become an EU member as soon as possible, but will always have close relations with Russia, adding that Serbia’s relations with Russia are centuries old and very close.
The Minister said that Serbia’s foreign policy priorities are defending the country’s constitutional order, accelerating the EU integration process and establishing harmonious relations with surrounding countries, adding that there is a danger that these different processes become interconnected.
He said that the defence of the country’s constitutional order and accelerating the pace of EU integration are two extremely important concerns and that Serbian diplomacy has to focus on keeping these two processes separate.
He said that Serbia is fully cooperating with the Hague tribunal, therefore it expects EU integration to continue.
It is a fact that circumstances are not favourable currently. We have seen the institutional crisis related to the ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon and a global financial crisis, unprecedented in recent history, There is no doubt that all this is affecting the European aspirations of the Western Balkan countries negatively, said Jeremic.
