Milosavljevic told a press conference that the manual is aimed at the needs of young parents and offers solutions for many situations parents may find themselves in during their child’s early years.
UNICEF Director for Serbia Judita Reichenberg stressed that the manual is a valuable gift for all mums and dads, especially first-time parents, announcing that in future UNICEF will also produce publications dealing with the problems of older children, especially adolescents.
She pointed out that according to UNICEF’s research, parents are not making enough efforts regarding their children’s education, every sixth mother breast-feeds her child, fathers are insufficiently involved in bringing up their child and that more than 70% of parents physically punish their children, which is not beneficial for their growth.
The free-of-charge manuals will be distributed to parents in health centres and institutes, as well as in kindergartens.
The Ministry of Health and the Association of Serbian Paediatricians helped to draft the manual and Imlek Company helped publish an edition of 30,000 copies.
