President of the Danube Tourist Commission Gerhard Skoff said at a press conference that 200 representatives from 11 Danube basin countries will participate in the assembly, which will last until December 6.
More than 400 cruise ships passed through the Belgrade port this year, 52,000 people disembarked and spent on average 18 hours in Belgrade, said Skoff.
He said that the importance of cruises is growing in the tourism industry, adding that it is estimated that by 2020 cruise holidays will become the most important form of tourism.
State Secretary for tourism at the Serbian Ministry of Economy Goran Petkovic said that Serbia has four ports on the Danube where tourists may disembark. These ports are located in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Donji Milanovac and Kostolac.
The state is making efforts to improve tourism infrastructure and the private sector is also investing in tourism facilities, said Petkovic.
He said that the assembly is a good opportunity for Serbia to present information about Danube tourism.
Director of the Tourism Organisation of Serbia Gordana Plamenac said that it is important for Serbia that it was entrusted with the organisation of this event, adding that the Danube has great tourism potential.
The Danube Tourism Commission was established in 1970 as a marketing association for the Danube basin countries with its headquarters in Vienna.
The commission chooses a theme every year and this year’s theme is “The Danube Moves”.
