Milosavljevic told a press conference that the Ministry is currently implementing a project, financed by the Global Fund with €9 million, aimed at stopping the spread of HIV infection amongst high risk groups and providing care, support and medical treatment to sufferers.
He recalled that there are 20 counselling centres in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Nis providing assistance to HIV positive persons.
President of the National Council for Coordinating the Global Fund’s Projects Ivana Misic noted that the project focuses on high risk groups.
She said that medical equipment and drugs worth RSD 75.5 million have been procured this year, adding that a number of programmes for these groups are being implemented.
Director of the Youth of JAZAS Karlo Boras said that the project is divided into two stages and will eventually enable Serbia to fight AIDS on its own.
He added that various services will be provided in larger towns and introduced gradually into smaller ones as well.
The project is to endorse and strengthen the current project implemented by the Ministry of Health by opening safe places, introducing new activities to suppress HIV infection and supporting activities aimed at forming a sustainable national response to AIDS.
Activities will include training courses for police, social and health workers, while another set of activities will be carried out with the aim of reducing discrimination against HIV positive persons.
