At the conference, “Protecting Forests from Fire”, Dragin delivered fire fighting vehicles to the public company Srbijasume to help protect forest from fires since the global climate changes are increasing the fire risks every year.
He noted that Serbia is the only country in the region which did not have significant problems with forest fires this year and thanked all those who took part in preventing and putting out fires this summer.
Director of the Forest Protection Directorate Sasa Orlovic specified that 45 forest fires broke out in Serbia this year in which 824 hectares of forests were destroyed, which is 30 times less than in 2007, when Serbia lost 16,000 hectares to forest fires.
He announced that together with Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Bulgaria, Serbia will start a project to put up notice boards in forests and added that next week Serbia will apply for EU non-refundable funds.
If the funds are approved, the project will be realised within a year at the latest, he added.
He explained that the new notice boards are to inform citizens about tree and animal species in the forest and warn them about harming the eco-system.
Orlovic said that the European Forest Week, which takes place from October 20 to 24, aims to increase the importance of forests and raise citizens’ awareness.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Spatial Planning, public companies Srbijasume and Vojvodinasume, national parks, the Faculty of Forestry and the Gorani Movement will take part in the activities.
The main event will be held on October 25 in Knez Mihailova in Belgrade.
