The research themed “Smoking in Pregnant and Nursing Women in Serbia“ is being implemented by the National Committee on Smoking Prevention within the Ministry of Health and the Serbian Public Health Association and is part of the project "Strengthening Capacities of Civil Society in Serbia", financed by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) through the Canadian Public Health Association.
It is implemented on the basis of the agreement signed between the Serbian Ministry of Health and CIDA.
Milosavljevic warned that tobacco smoke is a mass killer and the main cause of a large number of diseases, the majority of which can be prevented. He pointed to the importance of all of us to participate in smoking prevention.
According to him, the percentage of smokers in Serbia fell down by 6 %-7% and smokers’ awareness is considerably increased.
The research will be conducted on a representative sample of 2,700 women from 66 health centres in Belgrade, Vojvodina and central part of Serbia, which delivered babies in the period from April 1 to June 30, 2007.
Chief researcher Srmena Krstev pointed out that smoking during pregnancy, besides resulting in miscarriage and delivery of smaller baby, it can cause babies to have respiratory diseases, asthma and middle-ear diseases.
