Franco Frattini and Vuk Jeremic
Speaking at a joint press conference with Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, Jeremic stressed that there can be agreements and disagreements with Serbia regarding Kosovo-Metohija, but Serbia’s right to ask the international Court of Justice (ICJ) for opinion cannot be denied.
Frattini said he believes that EU countries will abstain from voting for Serbia’s initiative at the UN General Assembly.
Italy wants all EU members to be unanimous and considers that Serbia’s initiative to ask the ICJ for advisory opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence should not be opposed, said Frattini and added that Italy has always emphasised ICJ’s role and importance, therefore it will be inadequate if one state is not allowed to turn to it in need.
He also stressed that Italy is in favour of unfreezing the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU before end-year, or even sooner, if possible.
Only one EU country is opposed to this and we believe that we will soon manage to convince it to change its stance, said Frattini.
The Italian and Serbian foreign ministers agreed that liberalisation of the visa regime between Serbia and the EU should be accelerated.
