In an interview for the Reuters news agency, Jeremic said that this is the first time in the turbulent history of the Balkans that someone has tried to solve such a serious dispute in a peaceful manner and added that the UN General Assembly will send a very negative signal if it decides to block Serbia’s initiative.
I believe that the effect of this signal not only to Serbia and the region, but to the entire world, will come down to this: if you want to solve an issue, go ahead and use force because that is the way problems are solved, he said.
However, he noted that he believes that the UN General Assembly will give green light to Serbia’s ICJ proposal, given that on September 17 the UN General Committee decided to include Serbia’s initiative in the agenda of the General Assembly.
Jeremic also said he expects that voting will be held immediately after the UN General Assembly concludes its session next week, adding that he is convinced that the ICJ will state that Kosovo’s declaration of independence violated international law.
According to him, the transfer of the Kosovo issue to the ICJ in The Hague will speed up talks between Serbia and UNMIK on the international civilian presence in the province.
The Minister also noted in the interview that The Hague indictee Ratko Mladic will be arrested as soon as he is located and dismissed allegations that Belgrade is waiting for the EU to make concessions before taking steps to bring in Mladic.
