The 24 year old Serb has set a new European record of 50.59 seconds, which was a mere one hundredth of a second slower than the time of the Olympic winner American Michael Phelps.
Cavic was in the lead the entire race, but Phelps caught up on him literally in the last second and touched the wall first.
The Serbian swimming team lodged an official protest and demanded an additional viewing of the video recording. The committee of the International Swimming Federation watched the recording in slow motion and in several frames it was seen that Phelps did indeed reach the wall first.
The bronze medal was won by Australian Andrew Lauterstein in a time of 51.12.

Tennis player Novak Djokovic won the second medal for Serbia at the Beijing Olympics, beating American James Blake 6-3 7-6 in the bronze medal match.
The world number three got the crucial first-set break at 2-1.
In the second set, neither player was struggling on serve but they couldn't break either, and they were well-matched in the tie-break until a let cord helped Djokovic set up two match points.
As Blake sent a forehand into the tramlines, the 21-year-old Djokovic collapsed to his knees in delight.
