At a press conference in the government, Ljajic said that a national strategy on health and safety at work is to be adopted by the year’s end and warned that the number of lethal injuries at work in the first seven months of 2008 has doubled compared with the same period last year.
He recalled that in the first seven months of 2008, 38 workers died of lethal injuries inflicted at work, whereas last year the number was 18.
The cause of death is usually insufficient safety of facilities, disregard for health and safety measures prescribed by law and employee incompetence, he specified.
The largest number of deaths and injuries are in the construction sector, he said and added that the state inspectorate has so far carried out 9,309 inspections, during which 12,000 irregularities were recorded on construction sites and in industrial halls.
As of tomorrow, the Ministry will intensify the campaign themed "Safe and Healthy Work“. Fliers and brochures on protection and safety measures at work will be distributed at construction sites in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Zrenjanin, said the Minister.
