Slobodan Milosavljevic
Milosavljevic said at a press conference, held at the government building, that the strategy should cover the period until Serbia joins the EU, which according to projections should be in 2012.
He said that the aim of this document is to develop Serbia’s trade and markets to the level of medium developed countries in transition, adding that the strategy will help the development of the country’s entire economy.
Strategic goals of the Ministry are improvement of conditions for investment and building Serbia’s image through its presence on the regional market, he said.
Other goals are competition protection in accordance with the highest European standards, raising the level of competition and encouraging direct investments by facilitating the arrival of new retail chains, explained Milosavljevic.
He added that consumer protection is also a priority, as well as strengthening national brands, further liberalisation of the market with new trade agreements, reform of the Commodity Reserves Directorate and market monitoring according to EU standards.
The Minister said that 11 more laws must be adopted in the area of trade, and a priority is the law on trade which will make it possible to implement the strategy. He added that three more laws are in procedure – on e-trading, product safety and consumer protection, and the new law on competition protection is being drafted.
According to Milosavljevic, trade turnovers last year stood at €25 billion, which is 114% more than in 2001, and trade turnover per capita increased from €541 to €1.872 or 3.6 times.
